 What a summer! That’s honestly all I can seem to think about as August wraps up and the school year begins. Being a marketing intern at Door County Adventure Center was not what I was expecting, but I sure am glad I joined this awesome team. Over the course of three months, I gained some real-life work experience as a part of a marketing team, got to know some incredible people, and I had a really fun time doing it all!  As a communications and French major at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire attempting to enter into the workforce, this job offered me some insight into what it takes to maintain and promote a business. From public social media posts to doing behind the scenes work was interesting to experience. I learned of new software and how to effectively operate them. This was not only a valuable internship to finding out my future career goals, but it was also a great way to find new, different, fun people who I would have never met had I not found this internship. Words cannot describe how awesome of a team I was able to work with this summer. Not only was this team a big group of tight-knit friends, we were also a fluid and professional team when it came to the workday. When applying for internships earlier this year, I had no idea what to expect when it came to the workplace and what kind of a team I would be working with. With so many uncertainties with school, internships, and life in general this year, it couldn’t have turned out any better.
Overall, this experience was not only rewarding but pushed me to try new things and learn how to have fun even while in the workplace. I could not have done it without the amazing team behind me here at Door County Adventure Center. They taught me the value of a positive workplace and how a workplace should be when I graduate next year.

 My path leading up to becoming a Marketing Intern for Door County Adventure Center was definitely a whirlwind. I was preparing to graduate from college with an Arts Management degree and I was scrambling to find something to do for the summer that matched my new degree well. I saw the listing for a marketing intern and thought it sounded so fun and different from what you usually find. I still can’t believe how lucky I am to have gotten the gig and be a part of this amazing company!  Right off the bat, I was welcomed by my coworkers and felt right at home! Soon after my arrival, the team had a week-long orientation where we got to learn first hand about all of the things that Door County Adventure Center has to offer. I had a blast going on all the tours and learning the ropes of the daily operation. This orientation was by far the best and most unique one I have been a part of. Door County Adventure Center makes teamwork a top priority in their business and that was evident right away! I learned how to do the job, got much closer to my new teammates and learned how we all can work together for a common goal! This orientation style was a great way to ensure a successful season. Everyone on my team cared and wanted each other to succeed in our job and our everyday life! Being a recent graduate, I was eager to put to action some of the skills I learned while going to school. This job gave me plenty of opportunities to test and strengthen those skills and learn things I hadn’t before! One of my main tasks in this internship was social media platforms. The platforms were divided up amongst me and the two other interns, my platforms being Facebook and Pinterest. With these platforms, I was able to use my creative side, something that I was hoping to be able to do! I loved gathering pictures and videos and learning about how to market to a specific group. It was also so cool to be a part of the smaller marketing team and learn from my fellow marketers along the way. My favorite thing about my internship this summer is that there was never a dull moment! I didn’t want to be in an office all summer and this job was definitely not that! The role of a marketing intern is so immersive and well rounded. From working at the beach with rentals to capturing pictures during zip line and kayak tours in Rowley’s Bay, and everything in between, this job keeps you on your toes and gives you a nice tan! I sharpened so many skills in marketing, customer service, graphic design, communication, etc.!
I am so happy I was chosen for this position. I have gained some great first-hand experience to take with me in my future career, and some lifelong friendships as well! All while living in the gorgeous gem of Wisconsin that is Door County. I 100% recommend this internship to everyone, it has truly been a once in a lifetime experience for me!
 Starting my marketing internship for Door County Adventure Center, I had no idea what to expect. Coming from Illinois, I had never been to Door County before (and only been to Wisconsin a few times). I was nervous to move to a new place with new people for the whole summer, but I was excited to gain marketing experience and move away from home. As soon as I arrived at the intern house, I knew that I made a great decision to spend my summer in Door County. All of my teammates made me feel welcome and included right away. A week-long orientation helped us learn how to work together as a team and also get to know each other. Soon we became close friends. It was so much fun going on all of the kayak and zip line tours, as well as learning a little more about what this company has to offer. This internship exceeded all my expectations and truly was a summer that I will never forget.  In the first marketing meeting, we went over and divided roles between the three marketing interns. I chose to manage the Twitter and the Snapchat accounts, two platforms that I was looking forward to gaining experience in. One of the best parts of this internship was that I actually got to use things that I learned in school and apply them to real work for a great company. I was able to use my skills in social media strategy, writing, photography and videography to promote the company online. In addition, I learned how to use Google My Business, how to target specific audiences through marketing, and how to market to consumers through email. I also gained valuable customer service skills and marketed to businesses in person by handing out posters around Door County. This was a such a fun way to promote our business and get to know the area better! Aside from marketing, I worked as a reservationist, answered phone calls, booked tours, and learned a lot about kayaking and zip lining. Working at the beach, I gave many paddle lessons, sent out rentals, and even learned how to ride our rescue jet ski! Working in many different roles helped me to be versatile and adapt quickly to what each day had in store.
I initially thought that I would spend this summer in an office, and I was looking for a “professional” internship to boost my resume for the future. Little did I know that I could get the same experience while working outdoors and having fun! Along with gaining valuable experience in my field, I was able to spend my summer in a beautiful new state and make the most amazing new friends. If you’re thinking about applying for this position, I promise you won’t regret it! I will always remember the memories I made in my summer with Door County Adventure Center.
 Door County is a place known for its beautiful sunsets, its cherries, and its picturesque small towns. However, this year, something unique is visible in the night sky. The NEOWISE comet is paying Earth a visit before it vanishes into space. While comets are notoriously unpredictable, NEOWISE is expected to return to Earth in about 68,000 years. The great thing about this particular comet is that it is visible in the evenings so you don’t have to worry about setting an alarm for two in the morning to catch a glimpse of this unique phenomena. To find this comet you can look almost directly below the Big Dipper constellation. Photo Credit to NASA: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/how-to-see-comet-neowise  While this comet may not be as bright as the famous Hale-Bopp in 1997 which was visible for over a year to the naked eye, NEOWISE is still a sight to see. This fast moving object made up of rock and ice which is visible in the night sky to everyone in the northern hemisphere may be a once in a lifetime experience. Door County is one of the best places to stargaze. Not that I am biased or anything, being born and raised in Wisconsin. However, the county’s dark zones reduce light pollution, allowing millions more stars to be observed with the naked eye. This makes viewing the NEOWISE comet extra special and extra bright on your Door County trip. You can catch a glimpse of the final frontier with no expensive equipment and maybe feel like you’re in Star Trek for a moment.

Door County, Wisconsin in particular is filled with endless hidden gems and adventurous outdoor activities! One such gem is the Niagara Escarpment! An escarpment is caused by erosion and faulting that results in two separate and level surfaces. Sometimes this happens between two land surfaces, and sometimes it occurs along waterways. Growing up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, my family often took short vacations in Door County. We frequently stayed in the waterside Village of Egg Harbor which, like many places in Door County, is a summer hot-spot. However, it wasn’t always brimming with resorts and tourists from all over the world. While it may be difficult to imagine, Egg Harbor has been home to many native residents long before it received its current name. Evidence suggests that people have inhabited this area since 10,000 B.C.E., while nomadic peoples have briefly settled the land as early as 12,000 years ago and about 2,000 years ago people have made permanent settlements in Egg Harbor and around Door County. The dominant tribes of the area include the Potawatami, the Winnebago, the Ojibwe, the Sauk, the Menominee, and the Ottowa. There are many stories that go along with how Egg Harbor received its name. Some say it was derived from the story of the first outsider to settle in Egg Harbor. They reportedly found an egg upon landing on the beach; others say it was because local seagulls nested on the shore. However, a more exciting story involves a food fight between four boats who were racing toward the land. The trailing boats began throwing food from their food baskets at the leading boat and in turn the food was flung back. The food fight continued until all the eggs were gone and thus the name Egg Harbor was given to the town. Soon after, Egg Harbor became an important lumbering area. People from all over the world began to establish their lives in the town, further developing housing, shops, saloons and restaurants.  Egg Harbor became the 10th organized town in Door County in July of 1861. The Village of Egg Harbor was created in August of 1964. As Egg Harbor developed, changes to the community came as well. In the 1950’s and the 1960’s Egg Harbor became a seasonal destination and many shops followed suit, only opening for the warmer months. Many buildings that stand today are sites of the first business owners that began their lives in Egg Harbor.
Despite my family’s frequent vacations to Egg Harbor, I thought I had seen everything this village had to offer, however, looking at Egg Harbor from the water as the sun is setting is a whole new experience. The Abundant Uses of the Zip Line Zip lines are a popular tourist activity throughout the world that emerge guests into a birds eye view of the beautiful sights of the area. But throughout history, the zip line has had a wide array of uses that are more than just thrill seeking. Going back in time, it is a fuzzy picture of exactly when and where the first zip line was created. But, many historians credit mountainous regions, such as the Himalayas and the Alps, as well as areas in China, as all contributing to the beginning of the zip line’s history. Back then, zip lines were used less for entertainment and thrill seeking and more for practicality. One way a zipline was popularly used was for transportation, especially over dangerous terrains. Zip lines were often favored over building bridges because it was much quicker to build zip lines, as well as to use them. Along with transportation, zip lines were very heavily used as a way to transport goods and supplies from one place to another.  Nowadays, the zip line is a common attraction found in the ecotourism world. It is used as a way to sight-see without disrupting the ecosystems that are being explored. This idea was brought about in the 1970’s by wildlife biologists who wanted to study forest canopies without disturbing the environment. From there the zip line world we know today took off! Starting in Costa Rica, zip lines for entertainment purposes and a tourist activity have become a trend among many countries and many types of terrain worldwide.

The Hine’s emerald dragonfly is an endangered species that can be found in our very own Door County, Wisconsin. The species was added to the U.S. List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants on January 26, 1995. This means that it is illegal to harm, collect, harass or kill the dragonflies because they are in danger of becoming extinct. It is also the only dragonfly protected by the federal Endangered Species Act. Appearance The Hine’s emerald dragonfly can be spotted by its bright-emerald green eyes and metallic green body with yellow stripes. Its wings are clear with red-brown coloring at the base. The creature’s body is about 2.5 inches long, and its wingspan is about 3.3 inches. Lifespan During its lifespan, the dragonfly goes through an egg stage, larval stage, and adult stage. The dragonflies live in the water as nymphs for 2 to 4 years after they hatch from their eggs. After this, they emerge from the water and shed their skin becoming a flying adult. The adult dragonflies may only live for 4 to 5 weeks. Reasons for Endangerment The dragonfly was originally found in Alabama, Indiana, and Ohio, but is now completely eradicated in these states. Today, it can only be found in Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, and Michigan. The species became endangered due to habitat destruction. Most of its wetland habitat has been destroyed by urban and industrial development. The dragonfly lives in spring-fed marshes and meadows with high levels of calcium carbonate. Another threat to the Hine’s emerald dragonfly are pesticides and pollutants that contaminate the water. The species needs pristine wetland areas with clean water to grow and develop. Door County The largest population of the Hine’s emerald dragonfly is found in Door County, Wisconsin. The coastal springs and wetlands of the area provide a rich habitat that the species is able to thrive in. The dragonflies can be found in multiple areas of the county, including the Mink River Estuary, Three Springs Creek, North Bay Marsh, Bailey’s Harbor Swamp, Piel Creek, and a few others locations. Mink River Estuary One way that you can find this beautiful endangered creature is our Mink River Estuary Kayak Tour. This tour will take you down one of the most pristine freshwater estuaries in the country. An estuary is an area where river water mixes with water from a large lake or ocean. In this case, the Mink River mixes with Lake Michigan at Rowley’s bay. The conditions of the large wetland in the Mink River Estuary allows for the Hine’s emerald dragonfly to breed and develop.
